Unctus's Retrofitter turns any artifact creature into a 3/3 with built-in recursion upside — relevant stats on a body that replaces itself when it dies. The three-mana cost is exactly right for what you get, making it a low-risk inclusion in any artifact-heavy shell.

Unctus's Retrofitter is a Commander card through and through — the graveyard recursion angle and artifact synergies scale with the longer games and higher redundancy that 100-card singleton rewards. In Modern and Pioneer, three mana for a 3/3 with conditional upside doesn't clear the bar; those formats want either a cheaper body or a more immediate payoff. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters for the same reason — the power ceiling is simply too low. Commander is where Unctus's Retrofitter earns its slot, particularly in artifact-matters builds that want reliable turn-three threats with late-game reach.

$0.14 bulk tier
At $0.14, Unctus's Retrofitter is deep bulk — easy to pick up in any trade binder or throw into an order without a second thought. Bulk rares with narrow appeal rarely climb, so treat this as a cheap functional piece, not something to stock up on.
