Umbra Stalker enters as a massive threat — its power and toughness equal the number of black mana symbols across all permanents you control, which in a mono-black or black-heavy shell routinely lands it as an 8/8 or larger on arrival. Eight mana is a real cost, but you're paying for a finisher that scales with the board rather than a fixed stat block.

Commander is where Umbra Stalker actually lives — mono-black decks like Erebos, God of the Dead or K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth pile up black pips fast enough to make it a legitimate late-game threat. In Legacy and Vintage it's unplayable; those formats have no patience for an eight-mana vanilla beatstick when Griselbrand exists. Modern can cast it but has no reason to — the format's threats are cheaper, faster, and come with text boxes. Umbra Stalker is a Commander card through and through.

Price Context
Current price
$0.44 bulk tier
At $0.44, Umbra Stalker sits firmly in bulk territory — you're paying almost nothing for a card with a narrow but real home. Bulk rares rarely appreciate unless a new commander pushes them into the spotlight, so treat it as a cheap pickup for the right deck rather than a spec.
