Typhoon punishes every land drop your opponents make, turning a near-universal game action into a draining clock that scales with the number of players at the table. It's one of the few enchantments that does real work without any setup and without targeting a single opponent.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Typhoon earns its slot — four players means four independent land-drop triggers, and most games run 8–12 turns, so the cumulative life loss adds up fast enough to matter. It's legal in Legacy and Vintage as well, but those formats move too quickly and rely too little on life totals for a slow drain enchantment to find a home. Oathbreaker is the one other 60-card-adjacent format where it's legal, and in a two-player game the life loss is roughly half as impactful, so Commander remains its clear best context.

Budget Alternatives
Cheaper options that do most of the same work
The direct budget alternative to Typhoon is Ob Nixilis, the Fallen, which deals 3 damage and drains 3 life per land drop at the cost of being a creature — easier to remove, but also capable of closing a game faster. Retreat to Hagra offers a similar drain trigger on lands at a fraction of the price, though it only hits one opponent per trigger rather than all of them, which meaningfully reduces its ceiling in multiplayer.
Price Context
Current price
$17.53 mid tier
At $17.53, Typhoon sits in the mid tier — noticeable but not backbreaking for a Commander upgrade. It holds value because it's a unique effect with no true functional reprint, so the price is unlikely to crater unless a direct reprint lands in a precon or Masters set.
