Triton Wavebreaker lets you redirect a spell targeting any creature to a different legal target — an on-board counterspell for single-target removal that your opponents rarely see coming. The cost is a five-mana 3/3, which is where Lyse Hext makes it worth running: in a merfolk-heavy shell that cares about every blue creature on the battlefield, the body is never just a body.

Triton Wavebreaker is a Commander card through and through. The five-mana investment is acceptable in a 40-life multiplayer game where a single redirected removal spell can swing a whole turn, and tribal synergies with merfolk commanders make the body relevant beyond the activated ability. In Legacy, Modern, or Vintage, a five-mana 3/3 with a situational tap ability doesn't come close to earning a slot — those formats move faster and run cheaper interaction. Commander is the only place Triton Wavebreaker earns its seat.
