Trespasser il-Vec offers a repeatable, free discard outlet on an evasive body — exactly what graveyard engines need and rarely find at common rarity. The Gitrog Monster decks in particular want this effect badly enough that the 2/1 shadow body is almost incidental.

In Commander, Trespasser il-Vec is a niche but genuine engine piece in any deck that rewards discarding lands or creatures repeatedly — it's not a generic include, but in the right 99 it punches far above bulk-common status. In Legacy and Vintage it's essentially unplayable; those formats have faster, cleaner discard outlets and the shadow body doesn't compensate. Pauper is the only other format where Trespasser il-Vec could theoretically see play, though the effect hasn't found a broken enough home there to matter competitively.
