Tread Upon gives a creature trample and +2/+2 until end of turn for two mana at instant speed — a clean combat trick that converts a blocked attacker into a guaranteed chunk of damage. It's a fine limited card and a fringe inclusion anywhere you need a cheap pump spell, but it doesn't make most Constructed or Commander cuts.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Tread Upon is too narrow — one creature gets a buff for one turn, and at instant speed that's mostly useful for killing a blocker or pushing through the last points of damage, neither of which justifies a deck slot in a 100-card singleton format. Pauper is its most competitive home, where cheap instant-speed tricks see real play and the trample rider can flip combat math meaningfully. In Modern, Pioneer, Legacy, and Vintage, Tread Upon doesn't compete with the efficiency of the pump spells those formats support. Run it in limited, consider it in Pauper, and leave it out of everything else.
