Tidewalker enters with a number of +1/+1 counters equal to the number of Islands you control, making it a potentially massive beater for zero incremental investment beyond your land base. The ceiling is real in mono-blue or heavy-blue builds, but it's a vanilla creature at heart — no evasion, no ETB value, just stats.

Tidewalker is a Commander card through and through — the format where you reliably hit 10-plus Islands in an Urza or Talrand shell is the only place this gets genuinely threatening. In Legacy and Vintage it's unplayable; those formats don't reward tapping out for a large vanilla at any point in the curve. Modern could theoretically support it in an Islandwalk or Merfolk-adjacent brew, but the competition at the same slot is steep and Tidewalker brings nothing beyond its size. Stick to Commander, and only in decks that specifically want a blue-pip creature count or an Island-heavy mana base.

Price Context
Current price
$0.18 bulk tier
At $0.18, Tidewalker is deep bulk — you'll find it in a commons box or a cheap lot before you'd ever order it alone. Bulk rare pricing like this doesn't compress much further, so there's no downside to picking one up speculatively for a blue-heavy build.
