Thunderscape Battlemage enters with up to two kicker effects — discarding two cards from an opponent's hand or destroying an enchantment — stapled onto a 2/2 body for three mana. The ceiling is real removal value, but both kickers cost an additional mana each, so the full package runs five mana for effects that dedicated spells handle more efficiently.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Thunderscape Battlemage is a fringe inclusion — the discard kicker can strip a key piece from one opponent's hand at instant-isn't-available sorcery speed, and the enchantment destruction is relevant in a format full of Propaganda and Rhystic Study effects, but five mana for a 2/2 with conditional value rarely makes the cut in optimized lists. Legacy and Vintage are legal formats but Thunderscape Battlemage has no footprint in either — the effect-to-mana ratio is simply too low against the card quality those formats demand. Oathbreaker is the one place where targeted hand disruption on a body could see niche play, particularly in black-red shells that want redundancy on discard effects.

Price Context
Current price
$0.50 bulk tier
At $0.50, Thunderscape Battlemage sits firmly in bulk territory and is unlikely to climb — the effect hasn't found a breakout home in any competitive or popular casual format. It's a low-risk pickup if you specifically need the kicker flexibility, but don't expect the price to move.
