Thornscape Master puts two activated abilities on a 2/2 body — pay four mana to destroy a black or red permanent, or pay four mana to give a creature protection from black or white until end of turn. The mana investment per activation is steep enough that Thornscape Master rarely earns its slot over cheaper, unconditional removal.
