Thornscape Battlemage enters the battlefield and immediately trades kicker payments for artifact removal, creature destruction, or both — three effects stapled to one card depending on how much mana you spend. The catch is the color requirements: WW and RR kicker costs demand a three-color mana base that can reliably produce all of them, which limits where it earns a slot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Thornscape Battlemage sees essentially no play in Legacy, Modern, or Vintage — those formats move too fast for a five-mana creature that needs additional color-intensive kicker payments to do anything impactful. Commander is its real home, where the enters-the-battlefield trigger multiplies in value under blink and flicker effects, and the card's flexible removal modes can answer an artifact or a creature on the same turn you deploy it. In Naya or five-color shells, the WW and RR kicker costs are manageable and the modal utility is genuinely useful in a format full of Signets and value creatures. Outside of Commander, skip it entirely.

Current price
$0.25 bulk tier
At $0.25, Thornscape Battlemage is bulk — it costs almost nothing to try and almost nothing to cut. Bulk rare status means the price floor is essentially already here, so there's no financial downside to picking one up if it fits your list.
