Thieves' Fortune card art
Thieves' Fortune digs four cards deep and lets you pocket any one of them — for a single blue mana at instant speed. River Song decks aside, this is a clean, cheap piece of card selection that earns its slot whenever you need to find the right piece at the right moment.

River Song

River Song's ability triggers whenever you cast spells without looking at the top card first, and Thieves' Fortune lets you surveil into the deck and then cast around what you've seen — threading the needle between fueling her counter and finding the spell you actually need.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict
commander

In Commander, Thieves' Fortune is a role-player in any blue deck that values instant-speed card selection — one mana to surveil 4 is a real rate, and the ability to hold it up on an opponent's end step keeps your mana flexible. Legacy and Vintage have more powerful cantrips at the same cost, so Thieves' Fortune doesn't crack those formats outside of casual or themed builds. Modern is where it sits most interestingly outside Commander — surveil 4 is deeper than most one-mana blue spells get, and decks that want graveyard setup or specific-card access have real reasons to try it. It's not legal in Pioneer, Standard, or Pauper, so Commander and the older eternal formats are its entire competitive surface.

Price Context

Current price

$0.24 bulk tier

At $0.24, Thieves' Fortune is deep bulk — you're paying almost nothing for genuine card selection. Bulk instant-speed cantrips at this price point rarely hold or rise unless they slot into a breakout Commander archetype, so grab them for the utility and don't expect the price to move.
