The Ozolith card art
The Ozolith is one of the most efficient counter-preservation engines in the game — when any creature leaves the battlefield, all its counters move to The Ozolith, and then The Ozolith redistributes them at the start of combat. Commanders like Wolverine, Best There Is, who stack +1/+1 counters aggressively, turn removal from a tempo loss into a reload; Karn, Silver Golem decks that animate artifacts get similar mileage anywhere counters accumulate on fragile pieces. One mana is an almost unfair rate for what it does.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Wolverine, Best There Is

Wolverine, Best There Is

82.1% of decks · synergy 0.74

Wolverine, Best There Is puts +1/+1 counters on itself through damage-dealing, so The Ozolith acts as a safety net — when Wolverine dies to a blocker or removal, all those accumulated counters park on The Ozolith and transfer back the moment a new threat enters combat.

02
Reyhan, Last of the AbzanYoshimaru, Ever Faithful

Reyhan, Last of the Abzan // Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful

60.8% of decks · synergy 0.56

Reyhan, Last of the Abzan // Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful already has a built-in counter-redistribution trigger on death, and The Ozolith doubles the safety net — counters that would otherwise be lost to exile or bounce instead land on The Ozolith, giving Reyhan another vector to move them onto the next threat.

03
Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate

Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate

57.7% of decks · synergy 0.52

Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate cares about moving counters between permanents, and The Ozolith is a free holding tank that feeds that engine every time a creature dies. The combination means no counters go to waste, and Omarthis can funnel them wherever they're most threatening.

04
Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp

Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp

51.7% of decks · synergy 0.49

Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp is built around modular, which already redistributes +1/+1 counters on death, but The Ozolith catches anything that would slip through — exile, bounce, or sacrifice outlets that bypass modular — and returns the value to the battlefield on the next attack.

05
Super Shredder

Super Shredder

48.7% of decks · synergy 0.47

Super Shredder scales on +1/+1 counters, and The Ozolith ensures that a removal spell aimed at it doesn't erase all that investment — the counters wait on The Ozolith and snap back onto the next creature that enters combat.

commander

oathbreaker

Commander is where The Ozolith earns its reputation: 100-card singleton means your best counter-laden creatures are one-ofs, and any removal that sticks is painful — The Ozolith converts those losses into deferred value rather than tempo holes. In Modern and Pioneer, it sees niche play in +1/+1 counter synergy decks and Hardened Scales strategies, where the one-mana cost fits cleanly into the curve and creature death is frequent enough to trigger it consistently. Legacy and Vintage can run it but rarely do — the formats move too fast for a card that asks you to durdle with counters across multiple turns. Oathbreaker, like Commander, is a sweet spot: planeswalker-centric formats still run creatures, and The Ozolith quietly protects any counter investment the deck makes.
