Tendershoot Dryad card art
Tendershoot Dryad generates a 1/1 Saproling at the start of every player's upkeep — that's up to four tokens per round in a four-player game — and once you hit city's blessing, every one of those tokens enters as a 3/3 instead. Five mana is a real ask, but the rate once it's active is enough to take over a game without any other support, and Shroofus Sproutsire decks have made it a near-staple for exactly that reason.

Shroofus Sproutsire

Shroofus Sproutsire

86.8% of decks · synergy 0.82

Shroofus Sproutsire's token-multiplication and Saproling payoffs make Tendershoot Dryad one of the most automatic includes in the archetype — 87% inclusion across nearly 11,000 decks says everything. The Dryad floods the board with Saprolings; Shroofus turns that flood into something lethal.

02
Slimefoot, the Stowaway

Slimefoot, the Stowaway

72.8% of decks · synergy 0.66

Slimefoot, the Stowaway drains opponents whenever a Saproling dies, so Tendershoot Dryad's relentless token production functions as both an offense engine and a life-loss machine. At 73% inclusion across over 6,000 decks, it's the best standalone creature in the archetype.

03
Dina, Essence Brewer

Dina, Essence Brewer

61.7% of decks · synergy 0.55

Dina, Essence Brewer wants as much life-gain and sacrifice fodder as possible, and the stream of tokens from Tendershoot Dryad provides a ready supply of both. The Dryad's city's blessing upside also lines up cleanly with the life-swing density Dina decks want to assemble.

04
Slimefoot and Squee

Slimefoot and Squee

52.5% of decks · synergy 0.49

Slimefoot and Squee thrives on repeatable token generation to feed sacrifice and recursion loops, and Tendershoot Dryad delivers a fresh Saproling every single upkeep without any additional investment. Half the decks on record run it, which reflects just how cleanly it slots into the value engine.

05
Ellie, Brick MasterJoel, Resolute Survivor

Ellie, Brick Master // Joel, Resolute Survivor

51.5% of decks · synergy 0.48

Ellie, Brick Master // Joel, Resolute Survivor leans on incremental token accumulation to trigger its payoffs, and Tendershoot Dryad's multi-upkeep production schedule matches that gameplan beat for beat. Hitting city's blessing — easy in a go-wide shell — flips the tokens from irrelevant chaff into legitimate threats.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict
commander

oathbreaker

Commander is where Tendershoot Dryad genuinely earns its slot: four opponents means up to four tokens per round, and the city's blessing threshold is trivially easy to reach in a format where boards get large fast. In competitive Commander, five mana is slow enough that you need the engine to close games, not just generate value, so the Dryad lands more comfortably in mid-power tables. In Modern and Pioneer, a five-mana do-nothing-immediately creature faces a brutal bar — Tendershoot Dryad is legal in both, but rarely worth consideration when cheaper payoffs dominate. Legacy and Vintage are technically legal but practically irrelevant for this card. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander's token-friendly logic at a smaller scale, and the Dryad can be a real threat there if the format speed allows it.

Historically it has sat in the $2–5 range, which puts it firmly in the "just pick one up" category for any Saproling or token commander — the card does too much for its price tier to pass on.
