Tempest Djinn card art
Tempest Djinn is a flying beater that scales with basic Islands, routinely hitting 4/4 or larger for three mana in any deck running a healthy blue base. The cost is real — triple blue in the casting cost locks it out of anything but mono-blue or heavily blue-skewed shells, but inside those decks it outperforms The Mindskinner and most comparably priced threats on raw power-per-mana.

The Mindskinner

21.2% of decks · synergy 0.19

The Mindskinner's mill-and-punish gameplan runs Tempest Djinn as a clock — a 4/4 or 5/4 flier that pressures opponents while the Mindskinner grinds libraries, creating a two-axis threat that opponents can't ignore either piece of without falling behind on the other.

Format Analysis

In Commander, Tempest Djinn is a role-player, not a headliner — mono-blue decks with 30-plus basic Islands can deploy a 5/4 or 6/4 flier by the mid-game, which is real pressure at a table, but it contributes nothing except combat damage and folds to any instant-speed removal. In Legacy and Vintage, triple blue on turn three is simply too slow against the format's combo and tempo threats, and the lack of evasion beyond flying doesn't compensate. Modern and Pioneer offer more hospitable mono-blue shells, but even there Tempest Djinn competes against threats that either protect themselves or close the game faster. Standard is where it has historically been most relevant, slotting cleanly into Island-heavy aggro-control decks that can reliably cast it on curve.

Price Context

Current price

$0.26 bulk tier

At $0.26, Tempest Djinn is bulk — the price of a card the market has decided is plentiful and replaceable. It's a safe pickup for pennies, and nothing about its role in mono-blue Commander or casual constructed suggests that changes.
