Tawnos, the Toymaker turns artifact creatures into a recursive engine — every time one hits the graveyard, you're generating token copies and setting up loops that other artifact recursion pieces like Junk Diver feed directly into. The cost is real: you need a critical mass of artifact creatures to make the engine hum, and Choco, Seeker of Paradise decks have figured this out faster than anyone else.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Choco, Seeker of Paradise
Half of all Choco, Seeker of Paradise decks run Tawnos, the Toymaker because Choco's blink and bounce lines generate exactly the enter-the-battlefield and death triggers Tawnos wants to exploit, turning a single artifact creature into a loop of tokens and value.

Illuna, Apex of Wishes
Illuna, Apex of Wishes hits permanents off the top of the library, and landing Tawnos, the Toymaker that way is immediately impactful — the token-copying engine is live the moment it enters, regardless of how it got there.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Tawnos, the Toymaker does its best work — 100-card singleton games go long enough for the recursive engine to compound, and artifact synergy commanders give it a built-in home. In Legacy and Vintage, the competition for three-mana artifact slots is brutal and faster engines exist, so Tawnos sits at the fringes. Modern and Pioneer are theoretically legal shells, but neither format has the artifact-creature density or the slower pace that lets Tawnos generate meaningful advantage before the game ends. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home if your signature spell interacts with the graveyard or artifacts, but the 20-life clock compresses the window considerably.
