Syphon Soul drains every opponent for 2 at once — in a four-player pod that's 6 life lost and 6 gained for three mana, all at sorcery speed. Outside of dedicated drain builds, especially Tor Wauki the Younger where each opponent ping triggers his ability, it doesn't make the cut.

Tor Wauki the Younger
Tor Wauki the Younger deals 2 damage to each opponent whenever you cast a noncreature spell that drains, and Syphon Soul hits all three opponents simultaneously — that's up to 6 additional damage stapled onto an already-efficient drain spell.

Commander is the only format where Syphon Soul is genuinely good — the drain scales with each additional opponent, and three-mana sorceries need a strong payoff to compete in a 100-card singleton environment. In Pauper it's legal but outclassed; direct damage and life gain both have more efficient options at common, and the sorcery speed is punishing in a two-player game where the math is just 2 life lost and 2 gained for three mana. Legacy and Vintage have no interest in a three-mana sorcery that doesn't end the game.

Price Context
Current price
$0.15 bulk tier
At $0.15, Syphon Soul is deep bulk — you'll find it in common boxes or thrown into trade binders as filler. The price reflects its narrow application; it holds no financial value, but it also costs almost nothing to try in a drain deck.
