Synapse Necromage enters with a mind counter on each opponent's creature, locking those creatures out of activating abilities — a static, board-wide tax that compounds the more creatures your opponents control. The effect is genuinely disruptive, but five mana for a 3/3 with no immediate protection means it gets answered before it does much work in most pods.

Commander is where Synapse Necromage has its best case: multi-opponent tables mean more creatures hit by the mind-counter effect, and the ability-locking matters most when someone is trying to activate a Mana Vault, a creature-based combo piece, or a utility creature like Selvala. Outside of Commander, the effect is too narrow and the body too fragile to compete — Pioneer, Modern, and Legacy all have faster, more resilient ways to disrupt activated abilities. Standard is the only other format where it might see fringe play, and even there it would need a dedicated shell built around the mind-counter mechanic to justify the slot.

Price Context
Current price
$0.19 bulk tier
At $0.19, Synapse Necromage is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not scarcity. There's no reason to expect that to change unless a future set leans hard into the mind-counter mechanic and turns this into a combo enabler.
