Sustaining Spirit turns lethal damage into a near-miss for as long as you keep paying its upkeep — opponents can't finish you off with combat or burn unless they first answer a 0/3. The ceiling gets genuinely absurd alongside Arcbond, where what would be a table-wiping damage loop instead leaves everyone at 1.

Sustaining Spirit is a Commander card first and almost nothing else. In a 40-life format with multiple opponents swinging, a repeatable damage floor is far more meaningful than it ever would be in a 20-life duel, and the upkeep cost is trivial in white decks that produce mana efficiently. In Legacy and Vintage it's technically legal but competes against faster, more proactive protection options and sees essentially no play. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander's appeal at a smaller scale, where the same life-floor logic applies.
