Sunstar Chaplain is a payoff for life-gain decks that converts excess life into card advantage, which is exactly what those strategies need to avoid running out of steam. The cost is a three-mana 2/2 body — mediocre stats, but the trigger is the reason you're here.
Format Analysis

In Commander, Sunstar Chaplain slots cleanly into any life-gain deck that wants to turn a passive resource into cards — Ayli, Oloro, Lathiel, and similar commanders all give it consistent triggers. Outside Commander, life-gain synergy decks exist in Standard and Pioneer, but Sunstar Chaplain competes with more efficient payoffs in those formats and rarely earns a slot over options that win the game rather than draw into them. Modern and Legacy have raised the bar high enough that a three-mana 2/2 with a conditional draw trigger doesn't make the cut.

Price Context
Current price
$0.24 bulk tier
At $0.24, Sunstar Chaplain is deep bulk — you're picking this out of a dollar box or grabbing a playset for under a dollar. Bulk rares at this price point don't hold value, but for Commander players building on a budget, the cost-of-entry is effectively zero.
