Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion turns any attacker into a double strike threat for three mana and tapping the land itself — no extra card required, just mana and a target. The activation cost is real, but in a Boros deck built around a single powerful creature, Wyleth, Soul of Steel in particular, that math pays off fast.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Wyleth, Soul of Steel
Wyleth, Soul of Steel draws cards equal to the number of Auras and Equipment attached to him, and double strike means he hits twice — which means he triggers Wyleth's draw effect on each combat damage step, doubling the card advantage. Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion is in 64% of Wyleth lists for exactly this reason.

Olivia, Opulent Outlaw
Olivia, Opulent Outlaw rewards attacking with multiple creatures and creates Treasure off combat damage, so a double-striking attacker hitting for two triggers generates twice the value. Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion slots in as an uncounterable, reusable way to push that engine harder.

Nelly Borca, Impulsive Accuser
Nelly Borca, Impulsive Accuser forces opponents to attack and rewards you for surviving combat, making any creature that can close the game quickly extremely valuable. Double strike from Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion accelerates the clock on the creature Nelly designates as the must-block threat.

Ruhan of the Fomori
Ruhan of the Fomori is a 7/7 that attacks randomly every turn — the question is always how fast he can eliminate the target. Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion answers that by making Ruhan a 7/7 double striker capable of a two-hit kill on nearly any opponent.

Zurgo Helmsmasher
Zurgo Helmsmasher already swings as a 7/2 indestructible beater on your turn, and Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion makes that a 7/2 double striking indestructible beater — 14 damage in one combat, commander damage lethal in two unblocked hits.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion sees virtually no play in Legacy, Vintage, or Modern because the combination of entering tapped and costing three mana plus a land tap to activate is far too slow for formats where the game ends by turn three or four. Commander is its natural home: the slower pace means the enter-tapped penalty is negligible, the activation cost is trivially affordable in the late game, and the effect — repeatable double strike stapled to a land slot — is genuinely powerful at any table. Oathbreaker is legal too, but creature-centric builds are less common there, limiting its reach. Outside Commander, Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion is a curiosity; inside it, it's a staple for any Boros or multicolor deck swinging a single dangerous creature.

Current price
$0.27 bulk tier
At $0.27, Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion is bulk by any measure — wide print availability has kept it there for years. The price isn't going anywhere meaningful, but that also means there's no reason not to pick one up the next time you're building a Boros commander deck.
