Sunfire Torch trades one mana and a sacrifice for three damage — functional, but three damage is rarely enough to matter in Commander, where 40 life and large creatures set the baseline. It's bulk removal that belongs in formats where one-toughness creatures are common and not in most Commander builds.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Sunfire Torch is too low-impact — three damage doesn't kill most relevant threats, and one-shot artifacts that require sacrifice offer poor return on a slot that could be a repeatable removal spell. In Pauper, the common-legal card pool tightens the competition enough that a one-mana, instant-speed three-damage source is at least worth evaluating in burn-adjacent strategies, though better options exist. In Modern, Pioneer, and Legacy, Sunfire Torch simply doesn't compete with the efficiency of established burn spells. Standard is its most plausible home, where the pool is shallow and any cheap interaction can find a temporary role.

Price Context
Current price
$0.10 bulk tier
At $0.10, Sunfire Torch is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a commons box, not a buy list. That price is stable because demand is minimal, not because the card is undervalued.
