Sundering Eruption // Volcanic Fissure
Sorcery // Land
Destroy target land. Its controller may search their library for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle. Creatures without flying can't block this turn.

Sundering Eruption // Volcanic Fissure destroys a nonland permanent and creates a tapped land on the front half, then flips into a repeatable direct-damage engine on the back — real two-for-one value stapled to a land drop. River Song decks in particular run it at nearly a 50% inclusion rate, which tells you exactly how good the card feels in practice.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

River Song
River Song's ability to cast spells from the top of opponents' libraries means Sundering Eruption // Volcanic Fissure gets cast for free off someone else's deck roughly half the time, making it both removal and a land-producing windfall with zero setup cost.
Ral, Monsoon Mage
Ral, Monsoon Mage triggers on instant and sorcery casts, so Sundering Eruption // Volcanic Fissure earns an immediate storm counter and accelerates the flip to Ral, Unchained — removal that also fuels the engine is exactly what that deck wants.

Melek, Reforged Researcher
Melek, Reforged Researcher copies instants and sorceries cast from the top of the library, and Sundering Eruption // Volcanic Fissure is a sorcery that produces a land token — copying it means two removals and two land drops off a single card.

Magar of the Magic Strings
Magar of the Magic Strings can exile Sundering Eruption // Volcanic Fissure and recur it as a creature attack trigger, turning the front half into repeatable permanent removal across multiple turns without ever recasting it from hand.
Format Analysis

| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the natural home for Sundering Eruption // Volcanic Fissure — the front half answers a problem permanent and replaces itself with a land, which is exactly the kind of tempo-positive spell that survives a 99-card singleton cut. The back half, Volcanic Fissure, becomes increasingly powerful in spell-slinger builds where commanders reward repeated casting. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but faces stiff competition from cheaper, more efficient removal and doesn't see meaningful play. Oathbreaker is the only other format where it has real potential, again in instant/sorcery-matters shells where the MDFC structure adds flexibility without a deckbuilding cost.

Price Context
Current price
$0.76 bulk tier
At $0.76, Sundering Eruption // Volcanic Fissure sits in bulk territory despite doing legitimate Commander work. Bulk rares that pull near-50% inclusion in popular commanders tend to drift upward as demand accumulates, but at this price it's a no-brainer pickup before any reevaluation happens.
