Summoner's Grimoire puts a free creature token onto the battlefield every time you cast a creature spell — the effect is immediate and cumulative, and it costs nothing beyond the initial investment of including it. Yuna, Hope of Spira decks treat it as a core piece, but any commander that floods the board with creature casts turns this into a passive token engine that snowballs fast.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Yuna, Hope of Spira
Yuna, Hope of Spira summons Aeons and legendary creatures repeatedly, and Summoner's Grimoire converts every one of those casts into an additional body — the token generation compounds with Yuna's already-explosive board presence to bury opponents in creatures.
Terra, Magical Adept
Terra, Magical Adept chains spells and creature casts together, and Summoner's Grimoire rewards every creature spell in that chain with a free token, turning Terra's spellslinger engine into a simultaneous go-wide threat.

Garnet, Princess of Alexandria
Garnet, Princess of Alexandria recurs and cheats out large creatures, and Summoner's Grimoire ensures each of those summons also populates the board — Garnet's power spikes get a free token rider every single time.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Summoner's Grimoire is legal across every major format except Pauper, but Commander is where it actually gets played. In 60-card formats the effect is too slow and too conditional — you need a creature-dense shell and multiple casts to generate real value, and those formats have better engines for token generation. In Commander, casting creatures is just the normal rhythm of the game, so Summoner's Grimoire produces tokens passively without asking you to build around it. Oathbreaker is a reasonable secondary home if the planeswalker is creature-heavy, but the raw volume of creature casts in a 100-card Commander game is what makes this card matter.

$0.35 bulk tier
At $0.35, Summoner's Grimoire is bulk — pick it up without hesitation if it fits your deck, because there's no financial downside. A card with a 30%+ inclusion rate in its top commander archetype at this price point is about as safe a bulk acquisition as exists.
