Sultai Flayer gains you life equal to the greatest toughness among creatures you control whenever a creature dies — on a 2/4 body for four mana that also has deathtouch. It's a solid value piece in creature-heavy black-green shells, but four mana for a non-recursive, non-threatening creature means it earns a slot only when your deck is already killing its own stuff.

Commander is where Sultai Flayer does its best work, slotting into sacrifice and aristocrats builds that generate repeated death triggers and want incidental life gain to offset aggressive opponents or combo damage. Outside Commander, it's functionally absent — Modern, Pioneer, Legacy, and Vintage all move too fast for a four-mana creature whose payoff is incremental life gain rather than board impact. In Oathbreaker the same logic applies as Commander, narrowed to whether your oathbreaker strategy actually kills creatures in volume. Sultai Flayer is a Commander card, full stop.
