Study Break taps up to two target creatures and replaces itself with a card draw — all for two mana at instant speed. It's a fine combat trick in creature-light formats like Pauper, but too narrow and low-impact for Commander.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Study Break earns its keep in Pauper, where tempo matters and card draw on a spell that also freezes blockers or attackers is genuine value. In Modern, Pioneer, and Legacy the competition is too steep — there are cheaper taps, better cantrips, and most decks have moved past this effect entirely. Commander is where Study Break struggles most: tapping two creatures in a four-player game rarely changes the board state, and drawing one card off a two-mana instant doesn't come close to the card-advantage floor the format demands.

$0.10 bulk tier
At $0.10, Study Break is deep bulk — it costs less than shipping. Don't expect that floor to move; this is a common with narrow applications and no meaningful demand spike on the horizon.
