Steam Augury

In Commander, Steam Augury is a role-player rather than a staple — the opponent-choice clause is worst in a pod where at least one player always knows what they're denying you, so the card performs better in spell-synergy builds that want any two of the five cards than in decks that need a specific one. In Legacy and Vintage, Fact or Fiction is strictly better and sees the play instead, leaving Steam Augury on the sideline in those formats. Modern and Pioneer are theoretically legal homes, but the four-mana slot in those formats demands immediate board impact, and card selection that lets your opponent decide rarely clears that bar. Oathbreaker is the other Commander-adjacent format where it can show up in Izzet spell builds, for the same reasons it works in EDH.
