Staunch Shieldmate is a Pauper-legal common, and that's where its best case lives — defender synergies and wall tribal are more viable at common than anywhere else. In Commander, it slots narrowly into Arcades, the Strategist or Doran, the Siege Tower builds where toughness translates to offense, otherwise it's too passive to justify a slot. In Modern and Pioneer it's outclassed immediately; no competitive shell wants a one-mana 1/4 with a shield counter when faster, more impactful one-drops exist. Legacy and Vintage don't acknowledge it. If you're running it, you're in Commander or Pauper, and you already know why.
