In Commander, Spitting Gourna fills a defensive role in decks that want reach plus deathtouch to tax aerial attackers, but five mana for a 3/4 with no enters-the-battlefield effect is a hard sell when green has access to creatures that do more for the same cost. In Pauper, the reach-deathtouch combination is more meaningful since removal is less abundant and the card pool is narrower, making Spitting Gourna a serviceable blocker in green midrange or stall strategies.
