Spirespine enters blocking a creature with power 5 or greater — a very specific traffic cop that does nothing against the most common threats at the table. The drawback of being forced to block on offense makes it a liability in any deck that actually wants to attack.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Spirespine is too narrow to earn a slot — it blanket-ignores anything under 5 power, which covers most combo pieces, mana dorks, and utility creatures you actually need to stop. Competitive formats like Legacy and Modern have faster, more flexible interaction at the same mana cost, so Spirespine never sees play there either. Pioneer and Oathbreaker share the same problem: the conditional blocking requirement is a design curiosity, not a build-around. Spirespine is legal across most formats and relevant in none of them.
