Sphinx of New Prahv lands as a 4/3 flyer that taxes every spell an opponent aims at your creatures, making combat tricks and targeted removal cost two extra mana. The problem is a five-mana 4/3 with no immediate board impact is a steep ask in any format where threats come cheaper and faster.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Sphinx of New Prahv is a fringe inclusion in taxing or sphinx-tribal shells — the ward-like effect has real teeth when three opponents have to work around it, but five mana for a 4/3 with no immediate value is hard to justify against faster tables. In Modern and Pioneer it doesn't see play; the format's removal is efficient enough that opponents pay the tax once and move on, and five mana gets you threats that win the game rather than stall it. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters for the same reason at a steeper power-level ceiling. Sphinx of New Prahv's best home stays Commander, specifically in slower, grindier pods where a flying blocker that punishes spot removal is worth the mana investment.

Price Context
Current price
$0.12 bulk tier
At $0.12, Sphinx of New Prahv is deep bulk — you're not buying this for value, you're buying it because you want the effect and the cost is basically zero. Bulk rares at this price point don't appreciate unless a new commander breaks them, and nothing on the horizon makes Sphinx of New Prahv that card.
