Spellbane Centaur shuts off all blue and black instant and sorcery targeting against your creatures — a wide blanket of protection for a three-mana 3/3. The effect is powerful in the right meta, but it does nothing against permanents, combat, or non-targeting spells, so it only earns its slot when your opponents are leaning on pinpoint removal and counters.

In Commander, Spellbane Centaur is a meta-call inclusion: blue and black are the most common removal and counterspell colors at most tables, so the protection is often live, but the card does nothing against boardwipes, sacrifice effects, or green and white spot removal.
