Spawnbinder Mage taps up to two target creatures your opponents control — relevant, repeatable disruption stapled to a 2/2 body for four mana. The cost is too steep for anything outside token-heavy tap strategies, where the activated ability pays for itself in combat math.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Spawnbinder Mage is legal across Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker, but it earns a slot in almost none of them. In Commander it has the most plausible home — tap-matters and token go-wide decks can abuse the ability repeatedly with untap effects — but four mana for a 2/2 with a paid tap effect is asking a lot when better options exist at the same price point. In Pauper, where commons compete fiercely for creature slots, Spawnbinder Mage is too slow and too conditional to see meaningful play. Constructed formats like Modern and Pioneer simply ignore it.

Price Context
Current price
$0.08 bulk tier
At $0.08, Spawnbinder Mage is deep bulk — it costs less than the sleeve you'd put it in. There's no pressure to acquire it and no reason to expect the price to mean anything beyond 'this card doesn't move collections.'
