Spartan Veteran enters the battlefield and immediately pumps your whole team, turning a board stall into a profitable attack. The cost is a three-mana 2/2 body that does nothing after the first swing — that's a poor rate in any competitive shell.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Spartan Veteran is a fringe option in go-wide white or green-white token strategies where a one-shot anthem can close a game, but there are cleaner one-time-pump effects stapled to better bodies at the same price. In Pauper it misses the cut entirely — the format's aggressive commons demand more reliable, repeatable pressure than a vanilla 2/2 that buffs once. Legacy and Vintage have no interest in it whatsoever. Spartan Veteran exists at a reasonable floor for budget Commander players who need cheap, temporary board-wide power, and nowhere else.

Price Context
Current price
$0.11 bulk tier
At $0.11, Spartan Veteran is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not scarcity. There's no realistic pressure on that price in either direction; bulk commons with narrow applications stay bulk.
