Sparktongue Dragon enters the battlefield and immediately demands attention — the 3-damage trigger on a 4/4 flyer means it trades up against planeswalkers or picks off utility creatures the turn it lands. The problem is five mana for a body that does nothing above rate if you can't pay the extra two, and in Commander that ceiling is just too low.

In Commander, Sparktongue Dragon is a fringe inclusion — it slots into Dragon tribal lists that need more ETB-damage effects, but it rarely makes the cut over higher-impact five-drops. In Pauper it's legal and a common, which actually gives it a home; five mana is steep there too, but a 4/4 flyer with guaranteed damage on entry is a real threat in a format light on flying blockers.
