The six-mana body is forgettable, but in any shell that generates excess mana, especially alongside Mana Echoes, the activated ability becomes a token engine that runs entirely on its own.

Commander is where Soul of Zendikar actually lives — token and beast-tribal decks want a repeatable threat that survives counterspells and board wipes by operating from the graveyard. In competitive constructed formats like Modern and Legacy, six mana for a 6/7 without evasion doesn't clear the bar; faster, cheaper threats dominate those queues. Pioneer is similarly inhospitable. Soul of Zendikar is a bulk rare for a reason outside EDH, but inside it, the graveyard-activated token generation fills a real role for grind-oriented green decks.
