Soul Immolation kills a creature and replaces itself — instant speed, one black mana, no questions asked. The ceiling gets absurd when you pair it with Tree of Perdition or build around Auntie Ool, Cursewretch, where the exile clause becomes a resource rather than a footnote.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Auntie Ool, Cursewretch
Auntie Ool, Cursewretch cares about exiling cards from graveyards, and Soul Immolation feeds that engine directly — the spell removes a threat, dumps a card into exile, and gives Auntie Ool exactly the fuel she wants.

Thromok the Insatiable
Thromok the Insatiable wants creatures in play and doesn't mourn the ones that die for him, so Soul Immolation doubles as removal and a way to exile fodder that would otherwise sit uselessly in the yard.

The Scorpion God
Soul Immolation's damage trigger stacks with The Scorpion God's -1/-1 counter synergies, turning a cheap removal spell into a card-draw setup when the targeted creature already has counters on it.

Melek, Reforged Researcher
Melek, Reforged Researcher rewards casting instants and sorceries from exile, so Soul Immolation's self-exiling clause makes it a live card for future casts rather than a one-and-done removal spell.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |

| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Soul Immolation punches above its mana cost — instant-speed creature removal that replaces itself is exactly what black-heavy decks want at one mana, and the exile clause matters increasingly in a format defined by recursive threats and graveyard engines. Outside Commander, the competition gets stiffer: Modern and Pioneer both have access to Fatal Push and other unconditional answers that don't require the exile clause as a value prop. Soul Immolation finds its clearest home in Standard right now, where the card pool is narrower and a cantripping removal spell at this price point is genuinely competitive. Legacy and Vintage have too many better options for this to see serious play, but the legality means it's never a dead include if you're crossing formats.

Current price
$3.29 cheap tier
At $3.29, Soul Immolation sits in the cheap-but-not-bulk tier — fair for a cantripping instant with real Commander demand. It's unlikely to crater given the consistent play rate in Auntie Ool and Scorpion God lists, but it's not a card you need to buy speculatively either.
