Soul Exchange reanimates any creature from your graveyard for two black mana — the catch is sacrificing a thrull you control as an additional cost. In Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder decks that generate thrulls as a byproduct of casting spells, that cost is nearly free, making this one of the most efficient reanimation spells available to black.

Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder

Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder

26.0% of decks · synergy 0.26

Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder floods the board with thrull tokens every time you cast a creature spell, which turns Soul Exchange's sacrifice requirement into a resource conversion rather than a real cost — you're cashing in a token to retrieve whatever fatty just died.

02
Old Stickfingers

Old Stickfingers

9.2% of decks · synergy 0.09

Old Stickfingers mills creatures into the graveyard as a built-in function, giving Soul Exchange a full menu of targets to pull from; the sacrifice requirement is manageable in a deck that leans on cheap creature fodder to fuel graveyard value engines.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Soul Exchange sees virtually no play outside Commander and the oldest eternal formats. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but never sees competitive play — Reanimate does the same job for one mana with no additional cost, and the formats move too fast for a two-mana sorcery with a sacrifice rider to compete. Commander is where Soul Exchange actually has a home: token-generating black commanders make the thrull sacrifice trivial, and the lower power ceiling of casual tables means a two-mana reanimation spell is genuinely strong rather than merely playable. Oathbreaker is legal but too narrow a format to matter for this card.

unknown tier

Pricing data isn't currently available for Soul Exchange, so check Scryfall or TCGPlayer for a current figure before buying. Given its narrow appeal — primarily Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder decks — it's unlikely to carry a premium, but the old-border printing means supply is limited compared to a modern reprint.
