Somberwald Alpha turns every Wolf and Werewolf you control into a threat that forces bad blocks, granting them trample and buffing attackers whenever one of your creatures gets blocked. The effect is persistent and stackable, and at five mana it slots cleanly into the top end of tribal aggro curves.

Commander is where Somberwald Alpha actually earns a slot — specifically in Wolf and Werewolf tribal decks where the trample grant is blanket rather than targeted and the combat tax compounds across a wide board. Constructed formats like Modern and Pioneer have no competitive Wolf shell that wants a five-mana anthem effect when cheaper, more efficient options exist. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters for the same reason amplified. Oathbreaker could support it in the right green creature strategy, but the competition at five mana is steep enough that Somberwald Alpha stays a Commander card in practice.

Price Context
Current price
$0.13 bulk tier
At $0.13, Somberwald Alpha is deep bulk — easy to pick up in a trade binder or as a throw-in. Bulk tribal payoffs rarely spike unless a new commander or precon sends the tribe into the spotlight, so treat this as a cheap functional inclusion, not a spec.
