Sojourner's Companion puts an artifact land directly onto the battlefield — no mana cost paid, just a free permanent the moment it enters. The catch is the ward-style tax on a four-mana vanilla body, but commanders like Radagast, Wizard of Wilds and Imskir Iron-Eater don't care about the body; they care about the free land drop.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | banned |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Sojourner's Companion is banned in Pauper, which is the only format where it's off the table — the free artifact land was simply too consistent a threat at common rarity in that format's tighter resource environment. Everywhere else it's legal, though it sees almost no play in Legacy, Modern, or Vintage, where four mana for a 3/3 with an enters-the-battlefield land fetch doesn't compete with the formats' faster engines. Commander is where Sojourner's Companion belongs: the singleton format's artifact-land synergy decks want exactly this kind of redundancy, the four-mana cost is acceptable in a 40-life game, and the free land entering untapped can fuel same-turn combos.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Imskir Iron-Eater
Imskir Iron-Eater exiles artifacts from the graveyard to draw cards and gain life, and Sojourner's Companion feeds that loop by landing a sacrificeable artifact land for free — the body blocks or gets eaten, and Imskir converts it into cards.

The Capitoline Triad
The Capitoline Triad cares about artifacts entering the battlefield, and Sojourner's Companion delivers a free artifact land the turn it's cast, triggering the Triad's engine without spending additional resources.

Herigast, Erupting Nullkite
Herigast, Erupting Nullkite rewards casting artifacts from exile and wants cheap, recurring artifact fodder — Sojourner's Companion's incidental artifact-land production keeps the artifact count high for Herigast's cost-reduction and attack triggers.
Megatron, Tyrant
Megatron, Tyrant converts artifacts into energy and damage, and Sojourner's Companion supplies an artifact permanent for free, giving Megatron an additional conversion target the same turn it hits the battlefield.

$0.34 bulk tier
At $0.34, Sojourner's Companion is bulk — pick it up in any common-and-uncommon lot or grab a single copy for less than a pack of sleeves. It's unlikely to spike given its Pauper ban removes one demand driver, but the artifact-land synergy in Commander keeps steady demand from niche decks.
