In Commander, Smelt competes in a crowded field of one-mana red artifact removal — Shenanigans, By Force, and Abrade all ask hard questions about whether Smelt earns its slot. The answer is yes if you want unconditional instant-speed coverage at the absolute floor of mana investment, no if your meta runs light on artifacts or you need flexibility. In Pauper, Smelt is a clean answer to Affinity staples and sees occasional sideboard play. In Legacy and Vintage, the format's artifact density is high enough to justify it, though dedicated hate like Null Rod does more structural work. Across formats, Smelt is a role-player — never the wrong card when artifacts are the problem, never the first choice when they aren't.
