Skull Catapult turns any creature into a free sacrifice outlet and a 1-damage ping on the same activation, which matters enormously for decks that want either effect on demand. At two mana to cast and one colorless to activate, the rate is real — this is a workhorse, not a flex slot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Skull Catapult earns a slot, and even there it occupies a specific niche: sacrifice-matters decks that need a colorless, uncountered outlet available from turn two. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but never played — Altar of Dementia, Phyrexian Altar, and Viscera Seer all outclass it on rate or effect in those faster environments. Oathbreaker is legal and theoretically viable in the same token-sacrifice shells, though the smaller deck size compresses competition for the slot. Skull Catapult is a Commander card through and through, and even there it's a role-player rather than a staple.

Price Context
Current price
$0.27 bulk tier
At $0.27, Skull Catapult is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a box rather than order individually. The price is stable because demand is narrow and supply from older printings is plentiful; no reprint pressure or spike risk to worry about.
