Skittering Crustacean puts a massive, evasion-relevant body on the board for a cost that scales with your Island count — the payoff is real, but it's locked entirely to mono-blue or heavy-blue shells that can actually exploit it. Outside of Charix, the Raging Isle and a handful of Islandwalk-matters lists, it's a bulk rare doing nothing.

Charix, the Raging Isle
Charix, the Raging Isle's activated ability uses Islands as a resource cost, and Skittering Crustacean's toughness-to-power conversion means the deck gets a second massive threat that rewards the same Island-stacking game plan — more Islands isn't just good for Charix, it makes the Crustacean enormous too.

In Commander, Skittering Crustacean is a niche role-player — it belongs in Island-heavy mono-blue decks, full stop, and even there it competes with cheaper payoffs that don't ask you to tap down your mana base. Pauper is where it's most interesting outside of Commander: blue tempo and control shells can actually hit the Island threshold faster in a 20-life format, and a large blocker at common rarity has real defensive upside. Legacy and Vintage are legal but irrelevant — Skittering Crustacean has no competitive business in either format. Oathbreaker mirrors the Commander read: viable only in the right Island-dense shell, otherwise cut.

unknown tier
Current pricing data for Skittering Crustacean isn't available, but as a narrow, archetype-specific common it almost certainly sits at bulk — under $0.50 and likely under $0.25. Pick it up in a trade binder or bulk bin rather than buying singles unless you're building Charix specifically.
