Shieldmage Elder prevents all damage to target creature or player on your turn and each opponent's turn — effectively a reusable fog that costs a tap and untaps only at your upkeep. Seven mana to cast and a one-creature-or-player limit make it too slow and too narrow for anything but the most dedicated stall strategies.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|

| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Shieldmage Elder is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but sees essentially no competitive play in any of them. In Commander it occasionally surfaces in pillow-fort or group-hug builds that want redundant protection effects, but seven mana for a tap-based damage shield is a steep ask when cheaper permanents do the same job. Legacy and Vintage move too fast for a seven-mana do-nothing body, and Oathbreaker's lower starting life total makes a single-target damage prevention effect close to irrelevant.

Price Context
Current price
$0.20 bulk tier
At $0.20, Shieldmage Elder sits firmly in bulk territory and is unlikely to move — demand is too narrow and supply too deep to shift that floor. Pick it up for casual stall decks without hesitation, but don't expect it to appreciate.
