Sheer Drop destroys a tapped permanent for three mana — any permanent, not just creatures — and staples on a basic land fetch via awaken if you have six mana to spare. Outside of very specific awaken or landfall synergies, three mana sorcery-speed conditional removal is too slow for Commander, where targets are rarely cooperative enough to stay tapped when you need them gone.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Sheer Drop sits below the removal threshold — the tapped restriction means it whiffs against anything threatening you at instant speed, and three mana sorcery-speed is a steep ask when Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile exist at one. Pauper is the one format where Sheer Drop earns a real look: the card pool is narrow enough that the restriction matters less and the awaken mode occasionally pulls weight in slower games. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer the card simply doesn't compete — efficient unconditional removal crowds it out entirely. Oathbreaker follows the Commander logic: fine budget filler if you're building around awaken synergies, unplayable otherwise.

Price Context
Current price
$0.08 bulk tier
At $0.08, Sheer Drop is deep bulk — you're not buying it for value, you're finding it in a common box. The price reflects the card's power level accurately and isn't going anywhere.
