Serra Redeemer card art
Serra Redeemer puts a +1/+1 counter on every other creature you control whenever a Soldier enters — that's a board-wide pump engine that compounds fast in token strategies. Basri's Lieutenant does something similar but requires combat; Serra Redeemer just rewards you for playing your game, and in Myrel, Shield of Argive decks that flood the board with Soldier tokens, the counters stack before opponents can answer it.

Myrel, Shield of Argive

26.5% of decks · synergy 0.24

Myrel, Shield of Argive generates Soldier tokens on attack and locks opponents out on your turn, so every token trigger also becomes a Serra Redeemer counter trigger — your board grows wider and taller at the same time, turning an already-resilient token army into a lethal one.

Format Analysis

In Commander, Serra Redeemer is a role-player in Soldier tribal and +1/+1 counter decks — not a finisher, but a sustained value engine that punishes opponents for not answering it immediately. Constructed formats are a harder sell: Modern and Pioneer have enough cheap interaction that a three-mana 2/2 with no immediate board impact gets traded off before the trigger math pays out. Standard is where it's most viable outside Commander, since the Soldier synergy package is denser and the power ceiling of the format is lower. Legacy and Vintage won't touch it.

Price Context

Current price

$0.79 bulk tier

At $0.79, Serra Redeemer is firmly bulk — easy to pick up as a casual inclusion without any budget consideration. Bulk rares with narrow tribal homes rarely spike unless the archetype gets a breakout commander, so treat it as a cheap pickup that stays cheap.
