Serene Sunset kills a creature for one mana — one mana — by paying X equal to its converted mana cost, making it the most efficient removal spell in Commander for anything with a high-cost target. The catch is that you need green and it scales down to uselessness on cheap threats, so it earns a slot when your meta is full of expensive bombs, not weenie strategies.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Serene Sunset is at its absolute best: the format is defined by expensive, high-impact permanents, and paying one green mana to answer a Blightsteel Colossus or Ulamog is an absurd rate. Legacy and Vintage have it legal, but those formats move too fast and run too many cheap threats for a spell that blanks on anything costing two or less — it simply doesn't compete with Swords to Plowshares. Oathbreaker follows the same Commander logic on a smaller scale, and the lower-powered environment can still produce targets worth paying one mana for.

Price Context
Current price
$0.18 bulk tier
At $0.18, Serene Sunset is deep bulk — you're paying for a sleeve, not the card. That price is stable because demand is narrow: it's a strong effect but competes against universally playable removal in Commander, keeping it out of most staple lists.
