Selective Adaptation card art
Selective Adaptation resolves and immediately distributes keyword counters across your board — flying, trample, deathtouch, whatever your creatures already have, spread to the ones that don't. The cost is real: it's a sorcery that does nothing without a stocked graveyard or a keyword-dense board, so it punishes decks that can't set up that condition reliably. In Kathril, Aspect Warper shells where the graveyard is already doing work, Selective Adaptation is a one-card board buff that often ends games.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Kathril, Aspect Warper

Kathril, Aspect Warper

39.9% of decks · synergy 0.39

Kathril, Aspect Warper's entire engine is counting keywords on creatures in the graveyard and distributing them as counters, which means Selective Adaptation arrives to a board already loaded with lifelink, deathtouch, double strike, and indestructible — and spreads whatever Kathril missed to every other creature you control.

02
Indominus Rex, Alpha

Indominus Rex, Alpha

15.1% of decks · synergy 0.15

Indominus Rex, Alpha wants to load a single creature with as many keyword counters as possible, and Selective Adaptation gives every keyword already present on your board a second home, accelerating the kind of keyword density that makes Indominus Rex, Alpha's triggered ability fire most effectively.

Format Analysis

oathbreaker

Selective Adaptation is a Commander card through and through — the singleton format's large battlefields and graveyard-centric strategies are exactly where distributing keyword counters at scale becomes game-warping rather than marginal. In Legacy and Vintage it's technically legal but competes against a much higher power ceiling, and a sorcery-speed enchantment that requires setup simply doesn't clear that bar. Oathbreaker is the one other format where it has a realistic home, particularly in green-black spellslingers that lean on graveyard resources the way Kathril decks do in Commander.

$0.28 bulk tier

At $0.28, Selective Adaptation is deep bulk — pick it up without hesitation if the deck wants it. Cards at this price tier rarely hold or climb unless they spike into a competitive format, which isn't in the cards here, so buy for the synergy and don't expect the price to matter either direction.
