Secrets of the Key creates a Clue token and cycles itself for two mana total — one to cast, one to crack the Clue — netting a card while leaving an artifact on board as a bonus. It's a clean cantrip in any deck that cares about artifacts, Clues, or sacrifice fodder, and it asks almost nothing of you.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Secrets of the Key earns a slot specifically in artifact-synergy decks — Clue tribal, Urza builds, Breya lists — where the token does work beyond the card replacement. In Pauper, it competes in artifact and Clue-matters shells where cheap cantrips that leave board presence are legitimate role-players. Legacy, Vintage, Modern, and Pioneer all have far more efficient cantrips available, so Secrets of the Key won't see play there outside of dedicated Clue-token strategies that need redundancy. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander — relevant when the planeswalker cares about artifacts or investigation.

Price Context
Current price
$0.24 bulk tier
At $0.24, Secrets of the Key is deep bulk — you can pick up a copy as a throwaway addition to any artifact deck without a second thought. Bulk cantrips that see niche Commander play rarely move in price, so don't expect it to appreciate, but at this floor there's no reason to skip it if it fits your gameplan.
