In Commander, Sea God's Revenge earns its slot in tempo and Merfolk builds that want to buy a full turn rather than destroy threats permanently — the tap effect on all of a target player's creatures is the real payoff, not the three bounces. Constructed formats like Modern and Pioneer have long since moved past six-mana sorceries that don't end the game immediately, so it sees essentially no competitive play there. Legacy and Vintage are even less hospitable; the card simply costs too much for formats where the game is often decided by turn two or three. The sweet spot is lower-power Commander tables where the tempo swing of Sea God's Revenge can close out a stalled board state or protect a combo turn.
