Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker lands as a 4/4 flying haste dragon the turn he arrives, threatening six loyalty worth of pressure before opponents can answer him — that immediate body is the whole argument for running him. The five-mana cost is steep in competitive pods, and unlike Atarka, World Render, he doesn't close games through combat math alone, but in dragon-tribal shells he pulls his weight.

Atarka, World Render
Atarka, World Render decks want every dragon that can threaten damage on arrival, and Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker delivers a hasty attacker the turn he enters while his minus ability clears blockers — both halves line up cleanly with what an Atarka combat package demands.

In Commander, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker earns his slot in dragon-tribal decks as a redundant threat that doubles as removal — his minus one shoots creatures or planeswalkers, and his ultimate generates a sustained dragon army if he survives. In Pioneer, he saw fringe play in midrange red but was generally outclassed by more efficient threats before the format moved on. Modern and Legacy are too fast for a five-mana planeswalker with no immediate interaction protection, so he doesn't register there. Oathbreaker is his most interesting non-Commander home, where he can serve as the planeswalker general of a dragon-themed spell package.

$0.49 bulk tier
At $0.49, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker is firmly bulk — a former Standard rare that's been widely opened and shows no signs of recovering. That price makes him an easy pickup for any dragon-tribal Commander build that wants him without budget friction.
